“On verra demain”

When I turned 20, realising I had concluded a decade of my youth, I wanted to create a capsule as an ode to it. It’s my way of remembering my childhood and puberty, two important phases of my growth by channeling my memories, feelings and thoughts to materialise them into my craft.

I chose early on, to name this capsule “On verra demain” , meaning “we’ll see tomorrow” in french, because it’s the thought/philosophy I have grown with up to now. It has helped me with overthinking things that didn’t matter and appreciate the present moment.

I chose to work with formal suit silhouettes because through most of my youth, I have seen it as a figure of the “grown up person”. Therefore contrasting the rather sober aesthetic of the suit with the emotional representation of memories.

The process mainly revolved around the search of symbols for each stage of youth and implementing those onto suits. Each element is chosen to communicate the collective memory most of us have of our childhood and puberty. Each suit represents a different stage of youth, namely childhood, adolescence and now.

I associated the nonchalant style of children sketches with the careless attitude of childhood. I like the idea of the child that draws on doors, tables and walls, this time he does it on his dad’s suit.

Adolescence

Even though most people associate teenage years wild, reckless, mischievous behaviour, I experienced them as a period of awakening. I remember myself as constantly trying to mature my thoughts and by doing so, find the ones that shaped me. Around the conclusion of my adolescence I discovered an ad made by Baz Luhrmann ( director of Romeo+Juliet). Called “ Everybody’s free to wear sunscreen” (1999) the video starts off as advertisement for sunscreen but turns into a beautiful life advice discourse. All the wisdom the young me was looking for was displayed in this ad. I consider that it has greatly shaped me as a person and hence wanted to use it as a source for the capsule.
