SARA Portfolio on Sluice Magazine

"SARA" offers a view on childhood, adolescence and the transition in-between. These images question the very nature of youth, going beyond documentary into a dreamlike universe. An ongoing exploration of the boundaries between daily-life documentation and staged portraits. The strong presence of the photographer's little sister represents some kind of autobiography; through her daily life, Julia finds a parallel with her own experience. Her aim is to seize these so-called mundane moments, as they become curiously captivating: creating an atmosphere of playful exploration, a feeling of freedom.

Aux âmes bien nées, la valeur n'attend point le nombre des années ! À seulement 20 ans, Julia Gat est l'une des révélations de Photo Talent Academy. Elle a été choisie parmi les nombreux
postulants du concours sur le site de la Huawei Photo Academy. Son style documentaire, associé à son attrait pour l'art et la mode, fait de sa photographie un savoureux et nouveau mélange des genres. C'est d'abord son regard intimiste qui séduit, puisque c'est sa famille, notamment sa soeur Sara, qui lui sert de première modèle. Fille de chorégraphe, elle n'hésite pas à mettre à profit sa familiarité avec la mise en scène ainsi que le mouvement du corps. On découvre alors une manière singulière de voir la mode et de la photographier, à la recherche de l'humain plutôt que du style. Julia n'a jamais été formatée puisqu'elle n'a pas été scolarisée. Sa liberté provocante et l'audace de ses compositions d'images viennent peut-être de là !

Roots&Routes residency in Rotterdam

Roots & Routes is an international platform creating interdisciplinary projects with young artists, promoting social and cultural diversity in arts and media. During 2 weeks of creation with young artistes from around Europe, we've presented our projects at the Rotterdamse Schouwburg in the heart of Rotterdam. This residency has given birth to my new project, Sea of Light, mixing visual arts with music and dance. More info soon!
